Iranian state media has announced the launch of the country's first home-grown satellite - Omid (Hope) - by a Safir-2 rocket. It will be used for both research and telecommunications according to the same source.
Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said that "Iran's satellite technology is for purely peaceful purposes and to meet the needs of the country." as reported by Reuters.
