The U.S. Export-Import Bank has agreed to help finance a broadband satellite for U.K.-based Avanti Communications, indicating a growing willingness on the bank’s part to counter a strong offensive by the French export credit agency Coface.
Coface has backed a number of high-profile satellite purchases over the past year under a policy aimed at helping French-based suppliers compensate for unfavorable economic conditions, notably the slide in the dollar. Beneficiaries include three projects awarded to Thales Alenia Space -- the Globalstar 2 and O3b mobile satellite and broadband constellations, and two Yamal 400 telecom spacecraft.
