Russian space officials are to select the winning proposal for a new rocket intended to carry cosmonauts on missions to the Moon. This will mark the first time since 1964 that the Russian space programme has made the Moon its main objective.

GOCE lifts off
Tuesday afternoon, the Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) was lofted into a near-Sun-synchronous, low Earth orbit by a Rockot launcher lifting off from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia.
